An Additional Note About the Image

I also want to take a moment to address something directly regarding the image that has been used with some of the Metlakatla Heritage Foundation material.

The image currently being used was essentially a holdover image while we work toward having local artists create something specifically for the Metlakatla Heritage Foundation—something rooted in our own formline design, artistic traditions, and cultural identity.

It was never intended to offend anyone, misrepresent our art, or take away from the importance of the artists and the history behind these cultural designs.

I have tremendous respect and appreciation for the artists who have carried these traditions forward and continue to keep our art alive. Our formline traditions are more than just an image or a design. They carry history, identity, stories, and meaning that deserve to be treated with respect.

The temporary image was simply being used while we work toward creating something that is truly ours and appropriately represents the Foundation and our community.

Our intention is to have local artists involved in creating the imagery that will ultimately represent the Metlakatla Heritage Foundation. I believe that is the right way to do it—not simply to find an image that looks appropriate, but to work with the people who understand our art, our traditions, and our community.

This Foundation is being built with the hope of honoring where we came from, preserving what we have, and helping ensure that future generations have a connection to the history and culture of Metlakatla.

That includes being thoughtful about how we represent ourselves.

This is our history. This is our community. And, whenever possible, I believe the people of our community should have a hand in telling and representing that story.
