A Year of Hope in Metlakatla

A Year of Hope in Metlakatla United in Resilience: Our Community’s Journey Through Crisis and Recovery

Metlakatla, a small and tight-knit community in Alaska, has always been a place where people rely on each other. Despite the challenges that life brings, there’s a shared belief here—hope. This hope seems to shine brightest during times of crisis. The world has witnessed it many times, such as when wildfires tore through California, driven by the fierce Santa Ana winds. Communities pulled together, strangers became friends, and amidst the ashes, hope blossomed.

Similarly, when devastating rains and floods struck North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida, hope was there. People helped each other rebuild, showing that no matter the scale of the disaster, the human spirit can rise above it. This same spirit thrives in Metlakatla, where the bonds of community run deep.

One winter, a beloved local fisherman faced a crisis. His Fishing Vessel, essential for his livelihood, was severely damaged in a storm. The news spread quickly through the town. Without hesitation, the community mobilized. Friends, neighbors, and even those who only knew him in passing came together to help. They donated time, money, and materials, working tirelessly to repair the boat. In this collective effort, they found more than just the means to fix the vessel—they found strength in unity and a reaffirmation of their shared values.

This sense of community is evident in the rebuilding of the William Duncan Memorial Church (WDMC). The big church, a cornerstone of Metlakatla, faced significant damage, but the will to restore it was unwavering. Every brick laid and every beam raised was a testament to the community’s resilience. As the structure began to take shape again, so did the hope in everyone’s hearts.

Yes, 2025 is set to be a year of coming together—a time to focus on what is good. The people of Metlakatla have shown that no tragedy is too great to overcome when faced together. This year, they’ll continue to find the good in each other and in their shared experiences, making it a year to remember.

As the new year dawns, Metlakatla stands as a beacon of hope and unity. The stories of rebuilding, helping hands, and unyielding support serve as reminders that when a community pulls together, anything is possible. Here’s to 2025—a year of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of community.

The Tale of Metlakatla: A Journey to Self-Reliance

Building a Future: Metlakatla’s Path to Independence

In the serene, misty town of Metlakatla, Alaska, where towering evergreens whispered ancient secrets and the ocean tides carried tales from afar, a quiet yet transformative revolution was stirring. The townsfolk had long relied on the Federal Government to meet their needs, a dependency that had seeped into their lives, casting a shadow over the community’s spirit.

One chilly evening, beneath the soft glow of the northern lights, the townspeople gathered in the community hall. Elders, children, fishermen, artisans, and everyone in between came together, united by a shared question: How dependent should we, as a community, be on the Federal Government? The room buzzed with excitement and apprehension as voices rose, each echoing a desire for self-sufficiency and true self-governance.

Mayor Elowen, a wise woman with eyes that gleamed with determination, stood at the front. “Do we want to depend on the government for everything?” she asked, her voice firm yet inviting. “Or do we want to find ways to be self-sufficient and create our own opportunities?”

The question hung in the air, a challenge and a promise. The town had been stuck in a cycle of dependency, and it was time to break free. Elowen’s vision was clear: the road to independence would not be easy. It would require hard work, risk-taking, and constant learning. But the reward would be a community that could stand proudly on its own, resilient and thriving.

“But is it even possible?” someone asked from the back of the room.

“Yes, it is possible,” Elowen replied with unwavering conviction. “Will it be easy? Of course not. It will take dedication and perseverance. And no, you do not need a college education to achieve this. Yes, in some areas, technical knowledge will be essential, but for most of it, it will be about learning by doing.”

Inspired by her words, the community embarked on a journey of transformation. They began by identifying the skills and resources already present in Metlakatla. Fishermen shared their knowledge of sustainable fishing practices, artisans taught traditional crafts, and farmers explored innovative ways to grow crops in the challenging Alaskan climate.

Local entrepreneurs rose to the occasion, starting small businesses that catered to the town’s needs and tapped into the rich cultural heritage of Metlakatla. The town’s youth, eager and passionate, took on leadership roles, infusing the community with fresh ideas and boundless energy.

Workshops and mentorship programs flourished, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual support. Elders shared their wisdom, and everyone, regardless of age or background, had a role to play in the community’s growth.

As the months turned into years, Metlakatla began to change. The town was no longer defined by its reliance on the Federal Government. Instead, it became a beacon of self-reliance and ingenuity. The people of Metlakatla had not only learned to meet their own needs but had also built a community that celebrated its unique identity and strengths.

Standing by the shore, watching the waves dance under the northern lights, Mayor Elowen felt a deep sense of pride. Metlakatla had strived, struggled, and succeeded. They had become a truly self-governing community, one that future generations would look up to as a shining example of what could be achieved through hard work, unity, and a shared vision.

And so, the tale of Metlakatla was passed down through the ages, a testament to the power of community and the indomitable human spirit. The town had not just survived; it had thrived, proving that with determination and collective effort, anything was possible.

The Visionary’s Dream: Revival of WDMC

A Journey of Faith, Hope, and Community Unity

In the serene town of Metlakatla, Alaska, there stood a building that once pulsed with life and laughter. This was the WDMC church, a beacon of hope, community, and faith. Over the years, wear and tear had dimmed its grandeur, but not its spirit. And in the heart of one visionary, the dream of its revival burned brightly.

This man of vision was not just driven by sight but by a deeper, intrinsic understanding of potential and possibility. He saw what others could not – the future, vibrant and rich with the promise of the restored WDMC church.

He stood in front of the worn-out building, seeing not the cracks and decay, but the bustling activity that would soon fill these halls. He saw community members gathered for events and celebrations, their laughter echoing through the hallways. He envisioned a sanctuary where people found solace in worship and a place of healing for those in need. He foresaw a provision station, with an active food pantry offering nourishment to the community.

In his mind’s eye, the fellowship hall was alive with activity once more – kids participating in 5th quarter activities, learning, laughing, and growing together. He imagined community members coming together, pooling their resources, and their strengths to restore this building to its former glory, and beyond.

The vision was not just of a restored building but of a community united in purpose and action. He saw neighbors helping neighbors, local businesses contributing materials, and volunteers offering their time and expertise. There were fundraisers, workdays, and a shared commitment to bring the dream to life.

This visionary didn’t just see a restored structure; he saw a future where the WDMC church stood as a testament to the power of faith, hope, and community. His dream was infectious, and soon, the entire town rallied behind the cause.

Brick by brick, the building was restored. The sanctuary was filled with the sounds of hymns and prayers, the fellowship hall with laughter and conversation, and the food pantry with the hum of activity as volunteers stocked shelves and distributed goods.

The WDMC church, once a symbol of neglect, now stood as a beacon of resilience and unity. And the man of vision? He looked upon the vibrant, bustling hub of activity and knew that he had seen rightly – not with his eyes, but with his heart and soul.

In Metlakatla, Alaska, the dream had become a reality, and the community was stronger, more connected, and more hopeful than ever before.

What other projects or dreams do you have that you’d like to see become a reality?

Navigating Uncertainty: The Psychological Impact of the 2020 Pandemic on Students

“Resilience and Hope Amidst the Chaos”

Once upon a time, in the not-so-distant year of 2020, the world found itself battling an invisible foe. This unseen enemy, known as the coronavirus, brought life as we knew it to a standstill. Streets once bustling with activity became eerily quiet, schools and offices emptied out, and people retreated into their homes, hoping to stay safe from the disease.

Among the many affected by this global upheaval were the students. These young individuals, full of dreams and aspirations, found themselves grappling with a new reality. Classrooms were replaced by screens, teachers became tiny boxes on a monitor, and the social interactions that were once taken for granted vanished overnight. The fear of infection loomed large, but for students, another fear began to take root—the fear of the future.

The quarantine measures, though necessary, isolated them from their peers, mentors, and the familiar routines of academic life. Many students lay awake at night, their minds racing with thoughts of unfinished lessons, delayed exams, and the uncertainty of their educational journeys. Would they be able to attain their desired qualifications? Would they ever catch up on lost time? The questions were endless, and the answers elusive.

For some, the anxiety became a constant companion. The once straightforward path to graduation now seemed fraught with obstacles. Many worried about their prospects in an unpredictable job market. They wondered if their years of hard work would be enough to secure a future in an economy reeling from the effects of the pandemic.

However, amidst the fear and uncertainty, there were stories of resilience and hope. Students found new ways to connect and support each other. Virtual study groups, online tutoring, and digital hangouts became lifelines, bridging the gap created by physical distance. Teachers, too, rose to the challenge, adapting their methods and offering encouragement to their pupils.

Communities came together, recognizing the shared struggle and the need for collective healing. Mental health resources became more accessible, and conversations about well-being took on a new urgency. Slowly but surely, students began to navigate this new landscape, finding strength in their adaptability and the support of those around them.

As the world continued to grapple with the pandemic, these young individuals learned valuable lessons not only in academics but in resilience, empathy, and perseverance. They came to understand that while the future might be uncertain, they possessed the inner strength to face whatever challenges lay ahead. And so, in the face of adversity, they stood tall, ready to carve out their paths in a world forever changed by the events of 2020

The Restoration of the William Duncan Memorial Church

Breathing New Life into Heritage: The Journey of Rebuilding the William Duncan Memorial Church

In July of 2023, I found myself back in my hometown of Metlakatla, Alaska, surrounded by the familiar faces of my family and the comforting embrace of memories. Yet, amidst the warmth of homecoming, I encountered a disheartening sight: the William Duncan Memorial Church, once a beacon of community spirit and heritage, was in a state of disrepair. The dilapidated condition of the church broke my heart, igniting a resolve within me to restore it to its former glory.

Thus began my journey into uncharted territory—a restoration project of daunting magnitude, filled with countless moving parts. Despite my limited knowledge in such endeavors, I felt a deep-seated conviction that this was the right thing to do. With determination and a willingness to learn, I embarked on this mission, understanding that every significant journey begins with a single step.

The Plan Unfolds

The first step was research—understanding what it would take to breathe new life into this historic building. Through this research, a comprehensive plan began to take shape, outlining the necessary steps to restore the church to its original condition. Given the scope of the project, we set an initial timeline of five years, from 2023 to 2028, with regular updates to keep everyone in the loop on our progress.

  1. Roof Replacement: The church’s roof, weathered by time and elements, was in dire need of replacement. Scheduled for the spring of 2025, the town of Metlakatla graciously offered to donate both materials and manpower for this crucial task.
  2. Interior Repairs: Next on the agenda were the interior repairs—addressing mitigation, cleanup, and necessary restorations to the church’s once-beautiful interior.
  3. Heating System: The outdated heating system required immediate attention. Plans were made not only to get it up and running again but also to eventually replace it with a more efficient system.
  4. Restroom Updates: Modernizing the men’s and women’s restrooms was another essential component of the project, ensuring they met contemporary standards of comfort and accessibility.
  5. Elevator Installation: Considering the possibility of installing an elevator to link the main floor with the basement was an exciting prospect, aiming to enhance the building’s accessibility for all.

The Challenge of Fundraising

A project of this scale required substantial funding, and fundraising became a critical aspect of our efforts. I initiated communications and began the application process with two organizations interested in supporting our cause. Their potential involvement brought hope and momentum to our mission.

A Community United

Though the restoration of the William Duncan Memorial Church presented significant challenges, the journey was marked by a profound sense of community and shared purpose. The people of Metlakatla rallied together, contributing their time, skills, and resources to breathe new life into a cherished landmark.

As the project continues to move forward, I am filled with gratitude for the unwavering support and dedication of everyone involved. This endeavor, born from a moment of heartbreak, has transformed into a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of Metlakatla.

Keeping Everyone Updated

Throughout this five-year project, we commit to providing regular updates to keep everyone in the loop on our progress. This way, our community remains informed and engaged as we journey together toward the restoration of our beloved church.

Metlakatla: A Life of Beauty and Struggle

Finding Community in a Remote Paradise

The ferry’s horn echoed through the harbor, a familiar sound that always stirred a mix of anticipation and dread in Elara. Anticipation for the rare chance to escape the confines of Metlakatla, a tiny island village nestled in the Alaskan archipelago. Dread for the exorbitant ferry fees that would soon drain her already tight budget.

Life in Metlakatla was a constant balancing act. The island offered breathtaking scenery – snow-capped mountains mirroring themselves in the turquoise waters, eagles soaring overhead, the rhythmic crash of waves against the shore. But the beauty came at a price. Groceries were a constant source of frustration. The local store, with its limited shelves and frequent stockouts, felt more like a glorified pantry than a supermarket.

“Barge day” was a community event. Word would spread like wildfire if a shipment was delayed, sending residents into a minor panic. Fresh produce was a luxury, often appearing for a fleeting moment before disappearing again. Elara had learned to plan her meals weeks in advance, relying on canned goods, frozen fish, and the occasional foraged berry.

The allure of Ketchikan, the nearest city, was strong. Walmart and Safeway beckoned with their overflowing aisles of fresh produce, meat, and everyday essentials. But the ferry fees were a significant obstacle. $199 for a round trip with her truck was a hefty sum, a dent in her already meager income.

Despite the challenges, Elara wouldn’t trade her life for anything. The tight-knit community, the stunning natural beauty, the sense of belonging – these things far outweighed the inconveniences. It was a life of simplicity, of relying on your neighbors, of appreciating the small things. It was a life that demanded resilience and resourcefulness, a life that taught you to savor every moment, every fleeting taste of fresh produce, every breathtaking view.

Note: This story focuses on the challenges of cost and limited resources. You can further enhance it by:

  • Incorporating local culture: Mention the strong sense of community, the importance of traditional skills like fishing and hunting, and the unique cultural events that enrich life in Metlakatla.
  • Adding a personal touch: Describe Elara’s relationships with her neighbors, her struggles and triumphs in her daily life, and her deep connection to the island.
  • Highlighting the positives: Emphasize the beauty of the natural world, the sense of peace and tranquility, and the unique opportunities for adventure and exploration.

This short story provides a glimpse into the realities of life in Metlakatla, a place where the challenges are numerous but the rewards are equally profound.

A Summer Morning in 1990

Witnessing Nature’s Wonders from the Skies of Alaska

In the summer of 1990, I found myself soaring the Alaskan skies with Temsco Airlines, a journey that seemed more like a dream than a job. Stationed in Ketchikan, Alaska, I often had the privilege of keeping a plane in Metlakatla. One early morning, a mission beckoned—a trip to deliver a crucial document to a secluded logging camp on the Southend of Prince of Wales Island.

The day dawned with the promise of beauty. At 6:00 am sharp, my copilot and I climbed into the DeHavilland Beaver, N64393. He was learning the ropes of flying in this unique region, and the conditions couldn’t have been more perfect. The sun crept over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the calm waters. It was clear—this was going to be a magnificent summer day.

We arrived at the small camp nestled in a cove and swiftly delivered the document. As we departed, the Pacific Ocean stretched wide behind us, a vast expanse of blue. Climbing to about 1,000 feet, we approached another cove. As we drew nearer, an odd sight greeted us—the water appeared to be boiling.

Curiosity piqued, we circled over the cove and descended for a closer look. It was then that we realized we were witnessing a Super Pod of Killer Whales. These magnificent creatures were simply playing, adults and young ones alike, frolicking in the tranquil waters. It was an awe-inspiring spectacle.

My copilot and I shared a moment of silent amazement, our eyes wide with wonder. We hovered above the pod for a while, soaking in the extraordinary sight. Eventually, we resumed our journey back to home base, our hearts full from witnessing such a breathtaking scene.

Returning to Ketchikan, the memory of that summer morning stayed with us. It was one of those rare moments where the wonders of nature revealed themselves in full splendor, a moment that we would cherish forever.

Happy New Year Everyone!

May this year be filled with joy, new opportunities, and endless moments of happiness. Let’s embrace the fresh beginnings and make the most of every moment! Cheers to health, success, and all the wonderful adventures that await us in 2025!
