Where I come from, nobody sat me down and said, “This is how you become a man.”

There was no single moment.
No clear line you crossed.

It was something you grew into.

As a man of the Tsimshian Nation, I learned early that manhood is not something you claim—it’s something you carry.

And that weight didn’t just come from the men in my life…

It came from my clan.

In our culture, you don’t walk alone.

You belong to something older than you.
Something stronger than you.

The Tsimshian Nation people are organized through clans—each carrying its own identity, its own teachings, its own expectations.

And growing up, those weren’t just stories…

They were instructions.

The Killer Whale—often called Orca—was never just an animal to us.

It represented power.
Family.
Protection.

The Killer Whale moves with quiet authority.

Strong… but not reckless.
Powerful… but controlled.

That’s something I saw in the men who helped raise me.

They didn’t have to prove their strength.
You could feel it.

From that teaching, I learned:

A man doesn’t need to be loud to be powerful.
He needs to be steady.
Dependable.
Someone others can rely on when the waters get rough.

The Eagle Clan – Vision and Honor

The Eagle sees what others don’t.

It flies higher.
Moves with purpose.
Carries a sense of awareness and dignity.

The Eagle teaches vision.

Growing up, that meant understanding that being a man wasn’t just about today…

It was about looking ahead.

Thinking about your family.
Your future.
Your decisions.

The men around me carried themselves with that kind of awareness.

They understood that every choice mattered.

From the Eagle, I learned:

A man must see beyond himself.
He must think, act, and move with intention.

The Wolf Clan – Loyalty and Brotherhood

The Wolf never walks alone.

It moves with its pack.
It protects its own.
It survives through unity.

That lesson hit deep.

Because where I come from, you don’t just look out for yourself.

You look out for your people.

Your family.
Your community.

The men who raised me showed that in real life.

They showed up for each other.
Stood together.
Handled things as one.

From the Wolf, I learned:

A man is only as strong as the people he stands with.

Loyalty isn’t something you say—
it’s something you live.

These teachings didn’t live in isolation.

They showed up in our homes.
In our conversations.
In ceremonies like the Potlatch, where identity, responsibility, and belonging were reinforced.

That’s where you began to understand:

You are not just an individual.
You are a reflection of your people.

Every action carries your name…
and your clan.

Looking back now, I see it clearly.

I wasn’t raised by just one man.
Or even just a few.

I was raised by:

  • my father
  • my uncles
  • my elders
  • my clan

Each one shaping me in their own way.

The men showed me how to live.

The clans showed me why it mattered.

Closing Reflection

“I didn’t just inherit a name—I inherited a responsibility.
From the strength of the Killer Whale,
the vision of the Eagle,
and the loyalty of the Wolf…

I learned what it meant to stand as a man.

Not for myself—but for the people I come from,
and the ones who will come after me.”
