Today, I’ve been thinking about my Pops.

Today would have been his birthday.

For those of us who have lost someone we love, birthdays become something different. They aren’t just dates on a calendar anymore. They become reminders. Moments where memories come rushing back. Moments where we find ourselves wishing we could pick up the phone one more time, hear their voice one more time, or share one more laugh.

This morning, as I sat quietly with my coffee, I found myself listening to a song whose lyrics struck a little deeper than usual:

“If I had only known the last time would be the last time, I would’ve put off all the things I had to do. I would’ve stayed a little longer, held on a little tighter. Now what I’d give for one more day with you.”

Those words hit hard because they speak a truth that every son or daughter eventually learns.

None of us know when the last time will be the last time.

We don’t know when we’ll have our final conversation, our final handshake, our final hug, or our final chance to say, “I love you.”

Life has a way of convincing us there will always be another day.

Another visit.

Another phone call.

Another fishing trip.

Another story shared around the table.

Until suddenly there isn’t.

If I could have known which day would be my last day with Pops, I probably would have stayed longer. Asked more questions. Listened more carefully to the stories I’d already heard a hundred times. I would have paid more attention to the little things that seemed ordinary then but have become priceless now.

The older I get, the more I realize that the greatest treasures aren’t things at all.

They’re moments.

A conversation.

A smile.

A lesson passed from one generation to the next.

The sound of a father’s laughter.

Those are the things that stay with us.
