Located on Annette Island, Metlakatla is unlike anywhere else in Alaska. It is a place rich in Tsimshian culture, history, and tradition. While many destinations seek attention, Metlakatla quietly preserves its identity through its people, songs, dances, language, and community gatherings.

One of the most powerful experiences is witnessing traditional dancing in the Longhouse, attending community events at the Town Hall, or watching the 4th Generation Dance Group perform. These aren’t simply performances—they are living expressions of culture, family, and heritage.

Don’t Miss:

  • Longhouse cultural gatherings
  • Community celebrations
  • Traditional Tsimshian dancing and drumming
  • Local artists and carvers
  • Annette Island’s natural beauty

“Some places ask to be discovered. Metlakatla simply asks to be understood.”

The glaciers, whales, and scenery may bring you to Southeast Alaska.

The people, cultures, and stories are what will stay with you.

As someone who grew up in Metlakatla, worked in Ketchikan, flew throughout the region, and continues to call Southeast Alaska home, my advice is simple:

Slow down.

Listen to the stories.

Respect the cultures.

Support local communities.

And experience Southeast Alaska for what it truly is—a collection of remarkable places connected by history, resilience, and a deep relationship with the land and sea.
